教科書往往會告訴我們,教育扮演的功能是促進社會流動,只要努力就有機會取得向上流動,獲得不錯的成就地位。我們當然不會如此天真地就相信書中關於「努力就會成功」的美夢版本。而社會學更不會忘記提醒我們要時時刻刻保持警覺、批判與反思,讓我們意識到身處不同的先賦地位、階級位置、族群身分、性別角色、城鄉區域的學生,也可能會擁有不均等的教育機會。
